Three Roma ISD Schools Stand Out in Children at Risk School Guide
Children at Risk annually honors schools that rise beyond expectations and excel academically as Gold Ribbon Schools, which are determined as high-poverty, high-performing schools. In order to qualify as a Children at Risk Gold Ribbon School, 75 percent or more of a campus’ students must be classified as low-income, and the school must receive an A or B grade in the group’s annual academic school rankings. Charter and magnet schools are not eligible. According to Children at Risk, due to the pandemic, this year’s rankings focus on three-year analyses that showcase campus and district consistency overtime via its “Three Year Strong Ranking”. Three Roma ISD schools earned special recognitions in the rankings this year.
F.J. Scott Elementary School is ranked as the #1 elementary school in the Rio Grande Valley, followed by Emma Vera Elementary School ranked #2 and R.T. Barrera Elementary School ranked #6. In the state, out of 4,401 elementary schools, F. J. Scott Elementary is ranked #30, Emma Vera Elementary is ranked #37 and R. T. Barrera is ranked #105. All three schools are rated as “Consistent Gold Ribbon Schools”. F. J. Scott Elementary and Emma Vera Elementary are also named as “Pandemic Proof Schools”, meaning 75% or more of a campus’ students classified as low-income that have been classified as high performing campuses (receiving A or B C@R Grades) for three years running.
“There is no doubt that the past two years have been extremely challenging for everyone in education, but I am thrilled by the continued success witnessed at Roma ISD,” said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos Guzman. “These schools have continually outperformed their peers across the county, region and state. Two of them are National Blue Ribbon School as well, showing the true success they experience through a rigorous curriculum and highly motivated and supportive staff. We are extremely proud of the amazing students, staff and parents that make these recognitions possible. Thank you to everyone involved for showcasing the best of student excellence at Roma ISD.”
