Roma Middle School Band One of Only Two in the Country to Earn Highly Prestigious Sudler Cup from John Philip Sousa Foundation
Congratulations to the Roma Middle School Band for being named a recipient of the 2019 John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Silver Cup!
The Sudler Cup award is the highest international honor that a middle school band program can receive. It is awarded only to bands that have maintained a level of the highest quality of musical performance and organizational distinction at the international level over a period of at least seven years. To qualify for this achievement, the concert band needs to have been rated “superior” at state, regional or national levels of concert activities. The band should have performed at regional, state, national or professional meetings of significance, which can include state music conventions, regional or national MENC meetings and state or national band association conventions. The director must have been in the position for at least seven years, including the current year. Additionally, a number of band students must have participated in district honor or region bands, orchestras or similar groups. The total program of music should exemplify what is considered a sound viable, music education program for this level of endeavor.
The Sudler Cup is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, a non-profit foundation dedicated to the international promotion of band music. Established in 1985, the Sudler Cup has only been awarded to 58 bands! This marks the first time that a band from the Rio Grande Valley has ever been named to this outstanding list of band programs.
This truly marks a banner year for the Roma Middle School Band program. A special presentation of the official Sudler Cup, presented by a member of the Sudler committee, and a concert will take place in May of 2020 in Roma, Texas, in celebration of this momentous occasion. Many thanks go out to the students (both past and present), directors, parents, administration, and community of Roma ISD for your unwavering support of the program and music education!
