Roma ISD’s Emma Vera Elementary Named a U.S. Department of Education 2019 Blue Ribbon School
The halls and classrooms at Emma Vera Elementary School were buzzing with joyful laughter and squeals of delight as excited students and staff celebrated the news – Emma Vera Elementary was named a U.S. Department of Education 2019 Blue Ribbon School. EVE was nominated for the honor in spring 2019 by the Texas Education Agency. Founded in 1982, the Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels.
Emma Vera Elementary School is one of 312 public schools to earn the recognition and one of just 27 Texas schools to earn the honor. Roma ISD’s F.J. Scott Elementary School was nominated and won Blue Ribbon Schools Status in fall 2015. In total, Roma ISD has two blue ribbon schools out of nine traditional school campuses.
“I can’t express how humbled we are to earn such an important recognition at the national level,” said Emma Vera Elementary School Principal Yvonne Guerrero. “Our students and staff are some of the hardest working, most dedicated individuals you will find anywhere. We are completely united to working as a team to achieve success and help every student realize their personal best. I am honored and proud to lead our Mighty Cub Family, which has shown that our students are as bright, committed and capable as students at any school across the nation. I want to thank our parents, without whom this achievement would not be possible. I also want to thank all our colleagues across the Gladiator Nation for their support and enthusiasm for the success of our Emma Vera Elementary Cubs!”
Schools winning the award retain the title of “U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School” for five years. Winners are also celebrated at a dinner in Washington, D.C. to take place later in the school year.
“What a tremendous moment at Roma ISD – this is the pinnacle of success for any school, but for a school district our size to have two blue ribbon schools is truly amazing,” said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos Guzman. “I have always been impressed with the unity demonstrated by the team at Emma Vera Elementary. Their love and passion for their students is evident in everything they do, so it is no surprise that they have earned this honor. I congratulate them on the fine work they have done and am so proud of every student, staff member and parent that has contributed to the school’s success. Thank you for keeping Roma ISD at the forefront of the minds of our nation. We have many gems at our district and Emma Vera Elementary added yet another brilliant diamond for our community!’
