RHS Students Attending CNA Program

By: Joe Martinez, Roma ISD CTE/State Comp. Director

Twelve Roma ISD students have been attending an intensive Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA) Program at Rio Grande Valley College in Pharr, Texas. The CNA Program introduces students to nursing and practice fundamental skills needed to become a competent and knowledgeable patient care provider. The students are learning skills to communicate and interact effectively with patients and the patients’ family members; assist patients in attaining and maintaining maximum functional independence; maintain the rights of residents, patients and clients; apply proper body mechanics in bed making, lifting and turning patients; perform basic First Aid, CPR, and take patient vital signs; and follow infection control measures.

Students recently began their clinical work at Edinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and are working directly with patients. Students will earn a Certificate of Completion for the Nurse’s Aide Program from RGV College. They will be eligible to take the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) Nurse Aide Certification Examination in order to register as a Certified Nurse’s Aide upon successfully passing the written and skills exams.

The Certified Nurse’s Aide certificate program is part of the CTE Health Science Cluster being offered at Roma High School for those students interested in a future career in the health care field.

Congratulations to Roma High School students Yvette Alanis, Jenevy N. Garza, Briana I. Gonzalez, Nailea S. Gonzalez, Galilea Martinez, Aleks Ochoa-Garcia, William Ramirez, Valeria Rangel, Janella I.
