Roma High School Orchestra Program’s Marco Santistevan Selected as Texas All-State Musician

Marco Santistevan, a member of the Roma High School Orchestra Program, was named as an All-State Musician and will perform with the Texas All-State Sinfonetta Orchestra in San Antonio on February 17, 2018 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the 2018 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention. He was chosen for this prestigious honor through a competitive process held this year across the state at district, region and area levels competitions. Marco is a student of Dr. Joel Pagan and plays at school under the direction of Eliud D Garcia, who is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, a 19,000+ member organization headquartered in Austin. This is Marco’s first time to perform as a member of a TMEA All-State organization. Marco is the son of Patricia Laurel.

High school students selected to perform in the All-State concerts have competed through auditions to qualify at the state level. All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can achieve. 1,780 students are selected through a process that begins with over 68,000 students from around the state vying for this honor to perform in one of 15 ensembles (bands, orchestras, and choirs). Texas Music Educators Association sponsors the Texas All-State Competition. This competitive process begins throughout the state in auditions hosted by 33 TMEA Regions. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. From this ranking, a select group of musicians advance from their region to compete against musicians from eight TMEA area competitions. The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area Competition qualify to perform in a TMEA All-State Music Group. Only the top 2.6% of musicians who initially audition become All-State musicians.

“We are so proud of Marco, who has shown great dedication to his musical studies in not only his time as a middle and high school musician at Roma ISD, but also through his tenacious personal study. He is a great example of what can be achieved when you mix talent with hard work and determination, showing other students what it takes to reach this great musical achievement,” said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos Guzman. “We congratulate Marco and can’t wait to see his performance in February!”
